For And Against Boxed SetsCOSTS When someone buys a boxed set, the box, because of its size and weight, adds quite a lot to the p&p costs. Having said this we currently have a 'P&P free offer' for purchases of a total value above a certain figure - and ALL boxed sets are subject to a reduction at% at present. So pricewise this is the ideal time to treat yourself or friend or family member to some wonderful music.
CONDITION The condition of boxes is usually excellent, often pristine. Some show signs of wear and tear, but this is mentioned where this is the case, and not only is this hardly surprising given that many sets are 40 or 50 years old or more, but also invariably the cover has done a first class job of protecting the actual records, and the LPs themselves are, particularly in the case of classical music boxed sets, often in pristine condition: as new! On our part, so that the condition of boxed sets can be maintained as stated, every boxed set once listed is wholly covered and protected.
QUALITY OF MUSIC Many notable, even famous, people in the music world in their day, praised such musical collections. Whilst the same is true no doubt of the World Record Club and other producers of boxed sets, but in particular, the comments of the following musicians of renown, in the latter half of the 20th century, regarding Readers Digest collections are quoted below:
NOEL COWARD - I congratulate Reader's Digest and RCA upon the good taste and the excellent sense that they have shown
I should also like to express my unqualified admiration of the artists and technicians who have made a truly superb collection of show music - a true revival, in sound, of a golden era in the theatre. The Public, I know, will like this collection as much as I do.
BRIDGET D'OYLY CARTE - It gives me great pleasure to recommend these recordings
I wish them every success.
SIR ARTHUR BLISS - I congratulate Reader's Digest and the Radio Corporation of America. This splendid enterprise will commend itself to all who respond to music.
ERIC ROBINSON - Technically, the recordings are excellent, and for the records of this quality most reasonably priced
amazingly good value.
MAX JAFFA - The orchestra and artists are admirably chosen, and the quality of the recordings is really excellent. I have nothing but praise for this album and I strongly recommend it.
